The Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center of Kansas City (VSECKC) unofficially started in 1990 when Dr. Joe Desch and Dr. Reuben Merideth began providing veterinary specialty services (surgery and ophthalmology respectively) in Kansas City. Initially offering their services part-time out of general veterinary practices, they soon transferred their operations to an Overland Park after-hours emergency practice owned by veterinarians in the area.

In 1992, Dr. Jeff Dennis started offering internal medicine services in the emergency practice alongside the surgical and ophthalmology businesses. For efficiency reasons and due to space limitations in the storefront facility, the separate specialty businesses shared equipment, personnel and management. The role of specialty medicine in veterinary care grew slowly and by the year 2000 space limitations became problematic.

In 2000. Dr. Dennis and Dr. Desch purchased the emergency service. In 2002, the individual internal medicine, surgery and emergency businesses were merged into one business to form VSECKC. Coinciding with the merger, the practice moved into its present facilities. Since that time, neurology, dentistry, cardiology and oncology services have been added to the practice and we have continued to grow.

VSECKC merged its business with Florida Veterinary Specialists and New York Veterinary Specialists in 2008 to form BluePearl Veterinary Partners. This was the result of long standing business and personal relationships with the owners of these practices through an organization called the Veterinary Specialty Practice Alliance.

Additional veterinary specialty practices have since joined BluePearl Veterinary Partners as it seeks to grow a larger community of hospitals. Our organization remains committed to retaining strong local leadership within each practice, with veterinarians and veterinary professionals who are dedicated to advancing veterinary medicine and who understand that pets are important family members.
